Work Experience for Immigration: Canada Express Entry 2023: When you embark on the journey of immigration through Canada’s Express Entry system, one crucial factor that can determine the success of your application is your work experience. To ensure your eligibility, it’s vital to grasp what qualifies as eligible work experience for each of the three key programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).

FSWP 2023, canada express entry 2023

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

Under the FSWP, for Canada express entry, candidates must have worked in a job, either in Canada or abroad, that falls under specific National Occupation Classification (NOC) categories. These categories include:

  • NOC TEER 0
  • NOC TEER 1
  • NOC TEER 2
  • NOC TEER 3

To be considered eligible, candidates must demonstrate that they performed the duties outlined in the lead statement of the occupational description within the NOC. This includes fulfilling all essential duties and most of the main duties listed.

Additionally, the work experience should meet the following criteria:

  • It should match the NOC of the job intended for their Express Entry application.
  • It must involve paid work where wages or commissions were earned.
  • It must account for at least one year of continuous employment (equivalent to 1,560 hours or 30 hours per week) within the last ten years.
  • It should not have involved volunteer work or an unpaid internship.

Candidates can meet the one-year continuous work condition in three ways:

  1. Working full-time for one job, which equals 30 hours per week for 12 months (1,560 total hours).
  2. Accumulating an equivalent number of hours through various part-time jobs (each with less than 30 hours per week). For example, working 15 hours per week at two different jobs for one year.
  3. Combining full-time work from more than one job, as described in the first condition.

However, it’s important to note that hours worked beyond 30 per week are not counted for part-time employment.

Special student provisions: Candidates who meet specific conditions, including receiving paid wages, engaging in continuous work, and meeting other FSWP eligibility requirements, may also include work experience gained during their studies towards their application.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

CEC candidates must have a minimum of one year of skilled work experience for Canada express entry, either part-time or full-time, in one of the following NOC TEER categories:

  • NOC TEER 0
  • NOC TEER 1
  • NOC TEER 2
  • NOC TEER 3

Significantly, this skilled work experience must have been exclusively obtained within Canada. To be considered eligible, the work should also meet the following conditions:

  • It should have been completed within the three years preceding the submission of the application.
  • It must have been performed while the candidate was authorized to work in Canada under temporary resident status.
  • All duties outlined in the lead statement of the occupational description within the NOC, including essential duties and most main duties, should have been fulfilled.
  • The work must have been paid, involving wages or earned commission. Volunteer work and unpaid internships are not considered eligible.

Ineligible work experience: Self-employment and work experience obtained while a candidate was a full-time student do not meet the minimum eligibility requirements for CEC.

Special provisions for physicians: Self-employed foreign national physicians who have work experience in providing publicly funded medical services in Canada are exempt from certain CEC self-employment conditions. These physicians should not check the “self-employed work” box when creating their Express Entry profile.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Under the FSTP, candidates must possess work experience that adheres to specific criteria to be eligible for Canada express entry:

  • Two years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) work experience in a skilled trade within the five years before submitting an application.
  • Eligible work must demonstrate that the candidate performed all duties outlined in the lead statement of the occupational description within the NOC, including essential and most main duties.
  • The work must have been paid, involving wages or earned commission. Volunteer work and unpaid internships do not count towards FSTP eligibility.

Additionally, to be eligible under the FSTP, the immigration candidate must have been qualified to independently practice the trade occupation during the work experience period. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the rejection of the FSTP application.

The eligible work experience for the FSTP should fall within one of the following eight NOC groups:

  • Major Group 72: Technical trades and transportation officers and controllers (excluding Sub-Major Group 726)
  • Major Group 73: General trades
  • Major Group 82: Supervisors in natural resources, agriculture, and related production
  • Major Group 83: Occupations in natural resources and related production
  • Major Group 92: Processing, manufacturing, and utilities supervisors, and utilities operators and controllers
  • Major Group 93: Central control and process operators and aircraft assembly assemblers and inspectors (excluding Sub-Major Group 932)
  • Minor Group 6320: Cooks, butchers, and bakers
  • Unit Group 62200: Chefs
