Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) is a term that refers to an Indian citizen who lives outside of the country. An OCI allows Indian citizens to hold citizenship in two countries at the same time.
Who Can Apply?
The OCI registration of foreign nationals is applicable if :
The individual must have been an Indian citizen at or after the time of commencement of the Indian Constitution, that is, 26.01.1950, or
He or she must have been eligible to become an Indian citizen on 26.01.1950, or
The person should have belonged to such a territory which became India's part after 15.08.1947, or
He or she can be such a citizen's child or grandchild or a great-grandchild, or
The individual can be a minor child of such individuals mentioned above, or
One can be a minor child, having both or one of the parents who is an Indian citizen, or
An Indian citizen's spouse or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Cardholder's spouse. This OCI must be registered under section 7A of India's Citizenship Act, 1955. Besides, the marriage should have been registered and subsisted for a period of continuity and not less than two years immediately preceding the OCI application's application.
How to Apply?
Following are the steps that need to be taken for the registration of OCI from the BLS website:
1. Online submission of OCI application along with self-attested requisite documents, photographs, and signatures. For minor boys who cannot sign, it should have the impression of their left-hand thumb. For minor girls, it is a right-hand thumb impression.
2. Submission of original supporting documents. It should also have photocopies for Vancouver and Ottawa Jurisdiction with photocopies only for the Toronto jurisdiction to BLS International for the necessary verification.
3. In case of a discrepancy in the application or the uploaded documents/photographs, the applicant will be informed by BLS International via email. Then, the applicants have to physically submit the required documents to BLS International, for necessary
4. After receiving and verifying all documents, the applicant will be receiving an automated email message, saying that the application is under process.
5. Any OCI application or service request will not be accepted offline any longer.
